Fortuny Mariano Fortuny
Was born in 1871 to Mariano Fortuny y Marsal and Dona Cecilia in Granada, Spain. Both parents were very famous painters and collectors of ancient oriental fabrics. Around the age of three his father passed away and soon after his mother relocated his family to Paris in 1874. This is were he developed a curiosity for understanding how things worked and how they were put together. He would then approach his work through the prospective of art, technology and science. In 1897 he met Henriette Negrin his muse whom he married, In 1898 the newlywed couple relocated to Venice, Italy.

Fortuny first fashion garment was the Knossos scarf made of silk, rectangular in shape, and painted with geometric, asymmetrical patterns.

In 1907 Fortuny would create his most famous fashion piece the Delphos dress. Made of pleated silk, this garment silhouette was inspired by the ancient Grecian gown, the long dress were simple and loose an the boarders were usually finished with Venetian colored glass beads. The Delphos dress was made famous by theatrical legends Isadora Duncan and Sarah Bernhardt

The pleated style can still be seen today like this pass spring many top designers included this style into their 2015 Spring lines names such as Roberto Cavalli, Alexander Wang and Veronique Branquinho.
