The African Queen

tamu-kenema-mei-parsons-7Tamu Thomas is London based fashion designer who is the creator of Kenema & Co a women’s wear company that combine contemporary fashion designs with African fabrics. Thomas just recently started a unisex line called “Interlude.” She makes it clear to her audience that her designs are not just for African’s “I want to defy the myth that African fashion is only for people of the African diaspora.” and does by advertising her clothing on all colors of people. Tamu Thomas has also started Kenema’s Big Sister, which raises funds to provide school scholarships for girls attending the Holy Rosary Secondary School in Kenema, Sierra Leona, this also where she got her companies name and the place where her are manufactured. Thomas also an advocate for promoting female entrepreneurship , education for women and also does other projects that have a direct impact on local communities in Sierra Leona. In 2014 Thomas was invited to the Smithsonian Museum of African Art to showcase her fashion talents on the runway as apart of the Earth Matters exhibition. I like Tamu Thomas not just because of beautiful choice to use African print in everything she designs but because she’s the true definition of a trend setter with her vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and crisp styles. Thomas combines her perspective on London’s in-numerous cultural influences from language to music with roots steeped in the West African tradition.
