The Punk Revolution

Vivienne Westwood

Was born April 8 1941 in Derbyshire, England to a father who was a cobbler and mother who was a cotton mill worker. At the age of seventeen, Westwood family moved to Harrow which is located in Middlesex were she began work at a local factory and then later enrolled at a teacher training school. By the early 1960s Westwood got married to Dereck Westwood, shortly after that their marriage dissolved and she met Malcolm McLaren and art student who later become the manager of the Sex Pistols. With her new partnership with McLaren she was introduced to a new world of creative freedom and the power art had on the political landscape and this encouraged her to start making jewelry. In 1971 McLaren opened a boutique shop at 430 Kings Road in London called SEX and started filling it with Westwood’s designs.This would later prove to be an important fashion center for the punk movement.

SEXWhen McLaren became manager of Sex Pistols, it was Westwood’s designs that dressed that band and helped it carve out it’s identity.

Vivienne Westwood is still designing today. The punk style that she created is a still a major style in todays fashion
